A British woman has dedicated a whole room in her home to her £20,000 Smurf collection.

Karen, 37, stores her 5,000-item collection, which features more than 1,000 figures of the fictional blue characters - made famous from the Belgian TV series of the same name - in a spare room in her house in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

''It amazes me that I've spent around £20,000 on the collection but, to be honest, with the amount I have, I'm surprised it's not more.''

She told the Daily Record newspaper: ''I'm not sure why I started collecting them. Something about Smurfs just kept me fascinated.

''It started off with loving the cartoons and then I got hold of a couple of the figures.

''And now, 30 years down the line, I've got a room for them in my house.

''It's every collector's quest to find all the different variations and moulds but I don't think any of us ever will.
