A US man returned a $690,000,000 cheque he mistakenly received.

''I'm proud of him for what he did, because if it were me and I was in his shoes, I probably would have done the same thing.''

Allen Smith usually gets $650 for college expenses but he was accidentally given much more money from the US Treasury Department, but his mother Patricia says there was no doubt in his mind about returning the cash.

She told WTVM: ''He immediately, immediately went to the VA officer at Fort Benning [to turn] in the cheque.

''I'm proud of him for what he did, because if it were me and I was in his shoes, I probably would have done the same thing.''

The Treasury Department have put the error down to either being hacked or a misprint.
