Police looking for a car thief discovered the 'criminal' was a young bear.

Officers in Teller County, Colorado were called out to an apparent car theft when a young couple noticed a stranger inside their vehicle during the early hours of the morning.

But when police arrived, they were startled to discover a hungry young bear had wandered into the unlocked car instead.

Once he had sat down, the door closed behind him and the furry animal was unable to get out.

Officers opened the door and the bear was able to return to his habitat.
