A UK man has had a "bionic bottom" fitted, allowing him to control his bowel movements by remote.

Ged Galvin, 55, suffered massive internal injuries in a motorbike accident, but surgeons were able to perform a complex operation to avoid his having to use a colostomy bag.

The team took a muscle from above Ged's knee, wrapped it around his sphincter, and then attached electrodes to the nerves. He can now control when he goes to the toilet with a small remote.

My gratitude to the surgeons is endless because what they have done is a miracle

He said: "It's like a chubby little mobile phone. You switch it on and off, just like switching on the TV.

"They call me the man with the bionic bottom, but that doesn't bother me. My gratitude to the surgeons is endless because what they have done is a miracle."
