Over 200 birds died when they were accidentally sucked into an airplane engine.

The flock of starlings flew straight into the path of a Germania jet which was taking off from Dusseldorf airport and on its way to Kosovo.

The birds seemingly came from nowhere and as the Boeing plane reached speeds of 200mph the feathered creatures were sucked straight passed the propellers and into the engines.

The pitch of the engine said it all.

Plane spotter Juergen Kienast said: "The pitch of the engine said it all."

Once in the air, the pilot reported engine damage and circled the airport for 45 minutes before making an emergency landing.

Nobody was injured, but the bird remains were visible on the runway and side of the jet.
