A drowning pet budgie has been rescued from the sea by a team of British divers.

The exhausted animal " nicknamed Captain - was spotted struggling to keep out of the waves half a mile from land by Cathy Jackman from the Torbay British Sub Aqua club.

It took the divers three attempts to scoop the tired animal out of the water and onto their boat.

An RSPCA spokesman says it is amazing the small household pet had survived being so far from land.

He said: "It's quite an unbelievable story. It's a mystery how he got so far out to sea. He's just lucky that the boat was passing at that exact moment."

The RSPCA " who has been described as "plump and well-loved" " are now looking for the budgie's owner.
