A British couple were horrified to discover their wedding cake was made of polystyrene.

Tony and Aimee West ordered a $448 three-tier sponge cake with white and dark chocolate icing and flowers from confectioner Creative Cakes.

Instead, they got a block of white polystyrene after they discovered the company had forgotten their order just four hours before the wedding reception.

Aimee said: "I felt so embarrassed... It was a lovely occasion and the ceremony was going to be the icing on the cake - only there was no cake."

Creative Cakes' Karen Williams responded: "By the time Aimee contacted me it was too late to make the proper cake. I would never have the time to bake a cake and ice it in that time."

Tony and Aimee were awarded $515 in small claims court.
