A US man has become a musical prodigy after hitting his head on the bottom of a pool.

''It just all came out. It was almost like it was just flowing with no limitations.''

Derek Amato had never been musical before, but after his accident - diving into the shallow end of a pool and hitting his head hard - he plays the piano like a virtuoso, making up melodies from the patterns of black and white blocks that stream across his brain.

He's already made an album of original material and is currently at work on a second.

Derek said: ''It just all came out. It was almost like it was just flowing with no limitations.''

Although he suffers some adverse symptoms from his accident, Derek, feels they are worth it for his newfound ability.

He added: ''I deal with fluorescent light issues. I collapse sometimes out of the blue. And the migraines and headaches are intense. And my hearing is half gone. ''But those things are kind of the price-tag on this particular gift. And I'm OK with that. So I look at it as a blessing.''
