A British schoolgirl lost almost all her fingers during a freak accident in art class.
The 16-year-old girl has been awarded $30,140 in damages after she placed her hands in a bucket of plaster of Paris while attempting to create a sculpture of her own hands.
When the white plaster set around her hands, neither teachers nor ambulance staff were able to remove it.
As large quantities of plaster can reach temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius, the girl suffered terrible burns over her hands and fingers.
The unnamed teenager - who underwent 12 operations - eventually had eight fingers removed.
The Giles School, in Boston, eastern England, admitted breaching health and safety regulations and also failing to report the incident to the Health and Safety Executive.
