A US man has been arrested for stealing an ambulance while drunk.

Lawrence Police Sergeant Susan Hadl claims the 21-year-old man decided to steal the vehicle after an evening of drinking with friends.

Paramedics had left the emergency service vehicle on the roadside while responding to a nearby medical emergency when the discovered it was missing.

The man - who led police on a brief, low-speed chase - was intoxicated and apparently claimed he had no other of way of getting home.

He was arrested on charges of theft of the vehicle as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
