A US school has started allowing students to pay for good grades.

The students - who can add ten extra points to two tests of their choice by donating to the school fund - will find themselves able to shift grades or make themselves pass an otherwise failed test for a small contribution.

Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro, North Carolina reportedly came up with the fundraising plan after last years chocolate sale flopped.

It's wrong to think that one particular grade could change the entire focus of nine weeks.

Principal Susie Shepherd has defended the idea saying it's not enough of an impact to change a student's overall grades.

She said: "It's wrong to think that one particular grade could change the entire focus of nine weeks."

Officials at the state Department of Public Instruction say exchanging grades for money teaches children the wrong lessons.
