A mammoth clean-up operation is underway in the UK after more than 20 tonnes of Marmite spilled on to a motorway.

Vast quantities yeast-based spread were catapulted on to the MI in South Yorkshire, North England, when a tanker carrying tubs of the savoury condiment collided in to a motorcaravan.

While the driver of the lorry was taken to a nearby hospital, his injuries were not thought to be serious.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "We were called to reports of a tanker, which was carrying 23.5 tonnes of waste yeast, overturning.

"Some of the contents were spilled on the northbound carriageway and we are in the process of emptying the remaining contents of the tanker and clearing up the spillage before it can be moved and the road reopened."
