Two US brothers have claimed a $5 million lottery prize six years after buying the winning ticket.

''negative influence''

Andy and Nayel Ashkar came forward just days before the ticket was due to expire and say they purchased the item from their parents shop in 2006.

Andy insists he waited six years to claim the huge prize because he was worried such a large amount of cash would have a ''negative influence'' on his life.

Nayel's wife Sara told The Post-Standard of Syracuse: ''It's crazy. [It's] hard to believe. It's still sinking in.''
