A US burglar accidentally photographed himself on his victim's phone.

The man inadvertently snapped himself during the robbery of a house in Suffolk, Virginia, whilst trying to use his victim's mobile telephone to make a call.

According to police spokeswoman Debbie George, the man photographed himself while he was trying to make a call.

The man then panicked and fled the property.

However, he forgot to take the incriminating device with him, leaving it for his victim to find.

Police are now using the image to search for the suspect.
