A US psychic lied about being assaulted by her work rivals.

Janet Lee - who calls herself the "foremost psychic in New England" - telephoned police recently to say she had been attacked.

The 35-year-old fortune teller told the officers she had a premonition it was one of her rival psychics who was to blame for the assault following several threatening telephone calls from them.

However, officers discovered inconsistencies in her story and believe she might have known her attackers and deliberately suggested her work competitors' involvement.

Her lawyer said Lee has stuck by her story.
