Contestants on a French TV show administered electric shocks to each other.

The television programme - called the 'Game of Death' - saw players zap one another with what they thought were near lethal electric shocks in order to win money.

However, unbeknown to the contestants, their fellow competitors were in fact actors. During the quiz, contestants punished each other with up to 460 volts of electricity when they got answers wrong.

Some screamed out in pain and others apparently dropped dead, but the majority of the 80 voluntary players still continued, believing they were taking part in a pilot for a new programme.

The social experiment aimed to show how the manipulative power of television can push people to outrageous limits.
