A US kids soccer team feared for their lives when an alligator came onto the pitch and stole their ball.

''We had to go find another ball, let's say that.''

The club - which is made up of 12-year-old boys - were playing a match on South Carolina's Hilton Head Island when the 13-foot beast came onto the pitch and stole the ball, then refused to let it go.

The alligator was eventually detained and spat the ball back out, but he had to be put down because he exceeds 12 feet, which goes against safety regulations.

Trevor Garbett, the team's coach, said: ''We had to go find another ball, let's say that.''
