Britons mistake chocolate for vegetables

Britons count chocolate in their five-a-day.

''Vegetables are an essential component of a healthy diet.''

According to the survey Veg-nation, some members of the British public believed their favourite chocolate snack and cereal brands counted towards their recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, citing Bounty's coconut filing as one of their five a day.

The shocking survey also found that 3.5million people had failed to eat one portion of vegetables the previous week and revealed that just one in four participants knew how to cook a simple carrot.

The North West of the country were found to have the worst diets with the highest number of residents not hitting their recommended five-day requirements.

Alana MacDonald of the British Dietetic Association warns: ''Vegetables are an essential component of a healthy diet.''
