More young Brits recognise Harry Styles than David Cameron.

''The fact that our children recognise figures such as Harry Styles and Barack Obama ahead of our own politicians clearly signifies how important a social presence is to tap into the nation's consciousness.''

According to research conducted by home phone and broadband provider, Plusnet, the UK's youths are 5% more likely to recognise the One Direction star over their own Prime Minister.

The poll - focussing on eight to 17 year olds - was topped by US President Barack Obama, with Harry coming in at second place.

The pair were closely followed by 'Top Gear' presenter Richard Hammond and David Cameron, with Harry's fellow 1D member Zayn Malik making up the top 5 most recognisable people.

Plusnet's Head of Products Kelly Dorset believes the results demonstrate the importance of social media as the One Direction Facebook page alone has over 30 million followers.

She explained: ''The fact that our children recognise figures such as Harry Styles and Barack Obama ahead of our own politicians clearly signifies how important a social presence is to tap into the nation's consciousness.''
