Cat to have gender reassignment surgery

''She was part of my family when she came home with my daughter.''

A cat is awaiting gender reassignment surgery.

Mittens, a stray cat with both male and female genitalia, was adopted by the Murphy family from Newfoundland in Canada, the Metro newspaper reports.

Owner Colleen Clarke-Murphy said: ''I'd like for it to be a female, but it really doesn't matter.

''She was part of my family when she came home with my daughter.''

The surgery - which will cost $1,500 - is necessary because the cat is suffering from bowel and urinary issues.
