A dog has been elected the mayor of Cormorant, in Minnesota.

''He doesn't know how to handle this publicity.''

Duke, 7, received over 50% more votes then his closest human competitor in the election to be named honorary mayor of the town in the midwestern United States.

Residents were thrilled with the announcement and claim Duke makes the community a safer place to live, reports The Metro newspaper.

Cormorant local Tricia Maloney told WDAY6: ''He won by a landslide.

The pooch will be officially sworn in to his new position on saturday (16.08.14).
