Scientists from the Vanderbilt University in the US have claimed that canines have more complex behaviours as they can think and plan because they 530 million neurons in the cerebral cortex, while cats only have 250 million.

Professor Suzana Herculano-Houzel told fox25boston.com: ''I'm 100 per cent a dog person, but, with that disclaimer, our findings mean to me that dogs have the biological capability of doing much more complex and flexible things with their lives than cats can.

''At the least, we now have some biology that people can factor into their discussions about who's smarter, cats or dogs.''
