A study conducted by HMV online to find out what the scariest horror film scenes over the past six decades were has proved the spine-tingling head spin scene in the 1973 horror classic was the scariest scene in cinema history, with 18 per cent of the 2,000 people surveyed ranking it as the most chilling clip.

'The Exorcist' was followed by the shower scene in 'Psycho', which came close to being ranked the most horrifying movie with almost 17 per cent.

'Silence of the Lambs' and 'The Ring' were also among the top ten terrifying titles, whilst the rocking chair section in 'Woman In Black' came in tenth place.

Further research from the study has revealed 45 per cent of people switch their lights on after watching a scary film in a bid to dispose any repetitive horror memory.
