Shop's battered sprouts

Terry's Traditional Fish and Chips in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, gave out 150 of the vegetable traditionally used in Christmas dinners to their customers as a treat, and it's proving to be popular.

Andrea Long, the manager of the shop, said: ''I don't know what made me think of it.

''I just wanted to do something that was a little bit different as a novelty for Christmas. And what's more traditional at Christmas than a Brussels sprout?''

And the shop boss insisted she was stunned with the result of the battered sprouts with just two out of the 150 customers claiming that they didn't like the flavour.

She told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner newspaper: ''I've found that at first people stand there and screw their noses up. But when pushed they'll say, 'Wow, they're lovely.''

Andrea and her staff will follow up their festive menu with battered stuffing balls and pigs in blankets later this month.
