David Dawes was convinced he had a rat infestation after he heard scurrying coming from upstairs, but couldn't believe his eyes when he opened up the warm storage area in his home in Swansea to find the huge reptile curled up in the corner.

The 30 year old called the animal welfare experts, who advised him to leave it alone, but he was concerned the snake may have been someone's pet so he took it to the nearest pet shop where it was identified as a Taiwan Beauty Rat.

The specific breed of serpent is native to eastern and south-eastern regions of Asia and can grow up to six and nine feet in length, according to the Metro newspaper.
