James Pattinson, 28, was attempting to put up the structure when he tripped over and landed on the two foot-long metal skewer which stabbed him in his eye.
In a moment of panic he was left staggering around before rushing to hospital to receive emergency treatment.
Speaking about the gruesome incident, he told Metro newspaper: ''At first I just thought I had something in my eye - then I stood up and realised it was a tent peg.
''I tried to pull it out but quickly realised it had buried itself about an inch in. I could feel it touching the bones of my nose.''
