The fast food restaurant beat the likes of KFC, Burger King, Subway and Starbucks for the top position, according to World Animal Protection - who compiled the list.

McDonald's came close to the top of tier two in the rankings of 110 global food companies for the way they source eggs from cage-free-hens and using higher welfare pork.

Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and the Co-op all were in the top tier compared to KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks who are in tier five.

Although McDonald's was ranked at the top, World Animal Protection said it still had a ''significant way to go to improve the welfare of the millions of chickens served up''.

Steve McIvor, the charity's chief executive, said: ''Consumers are showing that they increasingly care about the welfare of animals when deciding where to eat.''
