Adults drink to relieve stress

A new study by Drinkaware found that around 38 per cent of British adults had turned to the bottle to forget their problems and almost half found that booze cheered them up.

Two out of five said they drink when they are feeling down or nervous, with 54 per cent of these having done so at increasing levels of risk.

This trend was found in both men and women.

Drinkaware boss Elaine Hindal said: ''Whilst people might think having a drink after a hard day can help them relax, in the long run it can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety and make stress harder to deal with.''
