A spokesperson for the American-owned restaurant chain has said that it's shocking to hear as the topping is used on their Hawaiian pizza and is a ''best seller''.

Gareth Hopley, Head of Communications at Pizza Hut Restaurants, commented: ''We were surprised to hear that there was talk of banning pineapple as a pizza topping in Iceland as we know our customers love a Hawaiian pizza. It's actually one of our best sellers (number 5 in our top 10 list) and we sell over 440 thousand of them across our Huts every single week!

''We're really proud to be championing one of the nation's favourite toppings and for serving such a popular pizza in our restaurants for the last 44 years. We look forward to welcoming all pineapple lovers into our Huts with open arms over the coming weeks.''

President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson answered random questions from students in a Q&A video, and when asked about his thoughts on having the fruit on the Italian treat, he claimed he was ''fundamentally opposed'' to the tangy topping, which is usually used on a Hawaiian pizza with ham.

According to the Metro newspaper, he then elaborated on his point and said he would pass a ban on pineapple as a pizza topping if he had the power to pass laws on his own, according to Iceland magazine.
