The dramatic situation led the officers to an automatic rifle, as they ran for their lives, and the police are now having to search for a T56 automatic assault rifle in the Lunugamvehera nature reserve.

The police said in a statement: ''The constables dropped their weapons and fled to save their lives when the elephants charged.''

According to official figures, around 50 people are killed in wild elephant attacks in Sri Lanka each year.

On the flip side, around 200 elephants are killed each year by farmers, who say that wild animals destroy their crops.
