Remote island uses Disney money

A remote Pacific island is using money featuring Disney characters.

Niue, in the South Pacific Ocean, has added the iconic cartoons to its currency, with the silver and gold coins featuring the company's best-loved characters including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pluto and Goofy.

However, the head of the New Zealand Mint, Simon Harding, has advised collectors not to spend the coins in shops, as the most expensive coin costing NZ$799 (£393) are only worth US$25 (£16) if spent on the island, reports Metro.co.uk.

He explained: ''It would be the height of financial folly to buy one of these products and then redeem it at face value for a fraction of that value, although I'm sure any Niuean shopkeeper would be anxious to hold onto the coins if you did.''
