''make it taste better and to improve his business''

A Chinese restaurant-owner has confessed to spiking his customers' meals with opium.

The owner, known to police as Zhang, has admitted to grinding up poppy buds and adding it to the meals at his restaurant so that customers would return.

The revelation emerged when a 26-year-old Liu Juyou, who frequently eats at the noodle restaurant, tested positive for opium during a routine drugs test. The man was only able to prove his innocence by persuading members of his family to also dine at the eatery.

Zhang admitted to adding the drug to his noodles in order to ''make it taste better and to improve his business'' although his plan failed as the quantity mixed into the meals was not enough to form an addiction.
