Hungry thieves managed to break the pin lock on the trailer holding the thick, sticky, condiment and made off with the precious goods using their own tractor in Montreal.

Mexuscan Cargo vice-president, Alfredo Monaco told The Toronto Star newspaper: ''We learned this week that it's a hot commodity - it's liquid gold.''

Mr. Monaco is now offering a $10,000 reward for anyone with any information that can lead to the arrest of the criminals or the return of the $150,000-worth of syrup.

The syrup shipment was heading for the Japanese market but it was stolen before the containers reached the water.

But Mr. Monaco is hopeful the stash can be found as it still features the Costco Kirkland Signature brand label.

He said: ''You can't just sell this stuff at the flea market.''
