Creepy vampire skeletons discovered

Vampire skeletons have been unearthed in Poland.

The skeletal remains of people buried with stones and sickles were discovered in a cemetery, with scientists saying the objects were probably placed there to avoid the dead coming back to life.

It is believed the corpses - which were discovered in strange graves in the north-west of the country - were buried in the 17th or 18th century after dying of infectious diseases.

Historians explained villagers hoped the heavy rocks and weapons would sever the head of the person if they came back to life, or prevent them from biting someone if they were vampires.

University of South Alabama professional Dr Lesley Gregoricka said: ''People of the post-medieval period did not understand how disease was spread, and rather than a scientific explanation for these epidemics, cholera and the deaths that resulted from it were explained by the supernatural - in this case, vampires,''
