Pablo Tamariz Coraquillo, 86, was reportedly held captive for around two years in the small village of Huauyan, Peru and was only rescued when officials responded to rumours about his welfare.

Villager Viviano Villareal Corral said: ''We knew he was there but his wife told us it was for his own good.

''She said he kept trying to run away and she decided the best way to keep him at home was to tie him up.

''But we didn't realise that he was there all the time. We just thought it was now and then.''
