Lady GaGa and Controversial are two words you might be all-too familiar with hearing in the same sentence, but after checking out the video for her latest single Bad Romance, I’ve got to say, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.
Don’t get me wrong, as soon as I heard the video was online I HAD to check it out right away, and it is (as per usual) GaGa-tastic with mind blowing wardrobe choices and an utterly bizarre storyline, let’s face it, after committing a fake suicide on stage at an awards ceremony this year, and killing her boyfriend in her last music video, this one had to go one better, but making yourself look like an anorexic… isn’t that a bit too far?
Whilst I have no shame in admitting I can’t get enough of Lady GaGa’s remarkable dress sense and I wish, wish, wish I could just spend five minutes with her, I am kind of disgusted by what I see at 2.15 on this video – because with the amount of young girls who thing she’s the bee’s knees, this is surely setting the wrong example?

I’m not going to assume Lady GaGa would be all too bothered – because you don’t see girls walking around in porcelain dresses or covered in plastic bubbles – but it’s the principle of the thing; GaGa looks pretty naked in the clip, so kids might assume she’s naked (and therefore ridiculously skinny) in real like too.
Whilst other parts of the video shows her looking rather healthy (and gorgeous) in just her underwear, this small part has ruined yet another masterpiece from miss GaGa… I just think as a role model to young women she should have thought this one through a little better.
I know Christina Aguilera shows the same body types in her video for ‘Beautiful’ but wasn’t that telling people that ‘You are beautiful, no matter what they say?’ when we see GaGa surrounded by hot men albeit in a rather weird setting, I know there would be people wishing to be in her shoes.
So, what do you think? Is it too much, or am I overreacting?

It was a fantastic video but the whole ‘anorexia’ was probably part of the storyline I mean why else would her vertabrae be sticking out like that?
I believe that the anorexic look that shows in that one setting is purposeful, but not to glorify it, but because it’s supposed to be horrific. The Fame – Monster is themed after horror, monsters, the things people shove in their closets. Maybe the point was to shock people and show how hideous anorexia is, not to make her “more beautiful.” I am fairly certain that everyone can tell that that isn’t her real body, as is obvious by all the skin she shows throughout the rest of the video. And if that was her real spin, she would have some hunch issues. lol. I truly believe that the point was to cause horror and disgust, not to encourage little girls to obtain the unrealistic body image.
I think that anorexia appearing moment is part of the rest of the theme of the video. Agreed above with the part of the ‘horror’ of her new album. But am I the only one that noticed the Egyptian feel to the video? Some of her outfits, the headpeices, the performing for the rich men, the bald cat, the mummylike white suits coming out of crypt’like baths. It all seemed very egyptian to me. And that shape body is kinda part of it.
More so than the anorexic scene, I found the treatment of human trafficking as ‘glamourous’ absolutely
horrifying. Along with that, we see her walking around (again) in 12-inch stilettos, which seems to speak outright
to the pleasure of the male gaze (again, the camera.) Then, the googly-eyed scene seems to point to the
rendering of the female figure as child-like, something all too commonly depicted. The scene which you point
out adds yet another layer of gross to the entire piece. This video really left me with a bad taste, too….
I do not believe that these Essenes gaga make sense of anorexia but with a sense of monsters. As its album the fame monster, look the choreography and the whole point of the video. Do not criticize me is just an opinion
Personally, I really enjoy Lady Gaga’s performances and her music videos. I think she’s incredibly talented and beautiful. I am anorexic and have been for about 2 years. Honestly, i was fascinated by her approach to the whole horror concept. I think it demostrates the terrifying things in this world, including mental disease. I wasn’t offended by her skinny body scene, but a little apprehensive to the way it might make some other people feel. I don’t think she was encouraging being that thin, rather just showing how awful it would be.
ummm thats how she really is thats her body its not computer graphics when she stands her legs on
cant come together shes very thin and very tiny shes only 5’2 and 100 pounds shes not a big
person its a video and if sum little girl r boy really wants to be that thin then i dont think see a 20
sec clip of her nudes gonna make them wanna starve themselfs more ok
You are over reacting. She is soooo enpowering women. Her sexuallity while hot is a part of being a strong woman. Obviously any child should not see her videos until an appropriate age just ike anything else. SHe is expressing her musical, artistic and conceptual genuis, as a women, embracing all sexual types and having fun.
There is no such thing as too much GAGA
AMEN THANK YOU!
well, i understand where you are coming from. i’m a huge gaga fan, and i look up to her, recently she has been looking thinner than usual but this is nothing to do with the way she looks in her video.
if you’re a lady gaga fan, you’ll know that she is obsessed with monsters, and i think in the scene where her spine is jutting out, she is trying to look like some kind of monster, not an anorexic.
xx
Has any of you ever seen taken i think thats the theme shes going for that she is a slave and theyre bidding on her (if you notice inn the video that they are pressing a button then it goes to a million) thats why they are all around the girls are in cages and stuff and all cracked out looking.
Not record sales figures as well? I think the slave auction works on several levels ( as does a lot of her work). I see it as talking about being a slave to the industry that she’s in, as well as a more personal statement.
Crack? Looks more like Crystal Meth to me : )
Anyway, this is a fascinating perspective on this subject. Please update this blog regularly! Also, do you allow your readers to send in questions they want to personally know more about? Right now I have a specific question on this topic because I am suffering through a complicated situation with a woman I have a crush on and I’m just not sure how to move forward. I’d like to get your input…or maybe someone can recommend a book that I ought to check out?
She is exploiting our cultures objectification of the female form for her own material gain and i think thats really wrong. She is just setting a bad example to all girls who follow her.
If girls are going to be so weak in character so that they follow some person on tv that they dont even know, then thats a fault in their upbringing…its just entertainment and lady gagas artistic expression…and btw younger girls/boys viewing things like this, then thats the parents fault for not being attentive enough as to what their children see..because your right younger audiences should not be subject to this however this is not GaGas faultif they do see it its the parents of the younger children.
She is NOT anorexic, she is a MONSTER in the shower.
She is not anorexic in the video.
She is portraying a lizard or “chameleon” if you will.
The song is about bad romance. Bad relationships.
Bad relationships can start with a chameleon personality when a person portrays something they are not.
i think that this whole controversy was blown so out of proportion. Its is part of the storyline. That
one little clip has people going crazy over her being “anorexic”. She’s not anorexic, its called movie effects
and make-up for the spine. LOVE YOU GAGA<3
This is NOT anorexia.
Firstly she is being a monster.
Secondly are you totally clueless as to how sexy many people find spines?Lady Gaga knows this, and knows the effect that the spinal enhancements would, have had on many of us.Totally Totally HOT.
A worthwile target for you to aim at would be the transphobic attitudes of most feminists.
Lady Gaga is about love, most feminists are bigoted Haterz.
Hi, here is a further observation that you may find interesting. The spinal enhancements ( which, if you look closely at the neck area, you will see stand several inches tall and resemble a scaled down Stegosaurus ) are strongly suggestive of the pronounced spine on ” Oracle” figure carvings from Papua New Guinea. I am not implying that this is what she based her imagery on, only that i see her as an oracle and so made a personal connection.Nevertheless, it is an example of a similar image from a different culture.
Whilst some people dismiss Lady Gaga as contrived and artifical, many of us think that she is extremely truthful, and has a guiding light. She invites everyone to join her world, but especially those of us who are socially marginalised.( I am a post operative male to female transsexual,In the UK there are about 6,600 of us,out of a population of over 60,000,000). Lady Gaga’s world feels very safe to many of us ( the marginalised, not just transsexuals lol ), much safer than the real world.
She encourages us to be proud of who and what we are, and only asks us not to be Haterz or hypocrites. The meat dress ( which was coture sp? stiched, not just thrown together) was just such an attack on hypocrisy. It was aimed at several targets, including a group i belong to – vegetarians who wear leather. This focused my mind on my own hypocrisy, and i am determined to become vegan this year.
