Haiti Charity Song – Cowell, It’s The Wrong Song Choice

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the choice of REM’s single, Everybody Hurts as Simon Cowell’s Haiti charity single is just a bit of an odd choice? I mean, it is one of my all-0time favourite songs, but it’s like ‘Everybody Hurts Haiti, get on with it.‘

So, I wasn’t expecting Kool & the Gang’s Celebration to be the choice, but this would NOT have been my first thought, I mean, it’s just a bit depressing isn’t it? Surely it would have been better to chose something which inspired hope?

Either way, it hasn’t stopped stars clamouring over each other in the hope of being chosen to feature on the track, and vocalists such as Leona Lewis, JLS, George Michael, Rod Stewart, Lady GaGa, Michael Buble, Take That and Robbie Williams are all said to have offered their services.

At the same time, Florence and the Machine will donate all the proceeds of an upcoming gig to the charity whilst Will Young, Joe McElderry and even N-Dubz (cough cough) are keen to get involved.

I know I’ll be buying the track, regardless of whether or not I think Cowell picked ‘the wrong song’

Word up! I am the music editor at FemaleFirst.co.uk. My favourite bands are Nightwish, Biffy Clyro and A Day To Remember. I do have rather biglove for the Now Thats What I Call Music CD's though. Katie Price annoys me but I love how she's made a name for herself by being annoying. That takes some work.

actually, when you listen to the lyrics it’s a very positive song. i think it’s a good choice… but i do think with the star power behind him they could have come up with an original tune in as much time.

    ‘Everybody Hurts Haiti, get on with it‘?? That’s a pretty odd thing to say;
you should look at the lyrics:

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you’re sure you’ve had enough of this life, well hang on
Don’t let yourself go, ’cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it’s time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you’ve had too much of this life, well hang on

‘Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don’t throw your hand. Oh, no. Don’t throw your hand
If you feel like you’re alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you’re on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you’ve had too much of this life to hang on

    Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

      a) “but it’s like ‘Everybody Hurts Haiti, get on with it.‘” … the OP was not saying that she thought they should just get on with it, but that is what the song choice seems to imply

      b) imo the posting of the full lyrics helps the original point. “When you’re sure you’ve had enough of this life, well hang on
Don’t let yourself go, ’cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes” surely that is saying, if you are hurting you can take comfort that everyone else has hurt at some point in their life too… So Haiti, if you are buried under rubble and choking on concrete dust you can take comfort in the fact that when I had my ceilings redone there was dust and debris everywhere, it took hours to clean up and two showers to get the smell out of my hair!

definitely the wrong song this is about suicide the americans have got it right with we are the world but ideally i’d have liked to have seen ‘heal the world’ by michael jackson

  4. Looby says:

I really dislike the song! The lyrics are okay, but personally I’d choose something more… interesting. Maybe it’ll be okay if they liven it up a bit. But the REM version is sh*t. And it’s a sh*t song.

  5. John Rolls says:

Definatly think this the wrong song . As beautiful as it is it does not sum up hope for Haiti for me personally. To me a song of hope would have been better trying to think of one at this time is hard so if you have an idea of a song of hope maybe Bob Dylans turn turn turn would have been more apt

why not have choosen a hatian mucisian, they have so many, or at least a carebean one
I agreed with it being a bad choice and feel ashamed of being a european

    • jackie mcewan says:

what a lot of rubbish good song or bad song it is making money and that is what counts and to feel ashamed just shows what a bad person you are

  7. jackie mcewan says:
