The Crazies Featurette

The Crazies hits the big screen this week starring Timothy Olyphant abd Radha Mitchell.

David Dutton (Olyphant) is sheriff in a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens.

But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill.

Another man burns down his house after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh…with insanity.

How To Train Your Dragon Trailer

2010 looks set to be another great year for the animation movie and How To Train Your Dragon looks like it’s going to be the first must see in this genre.

A Viking teenager named Hiccup lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life.

The teen’s smarts and offbeat sense of humor don’t sit too well with his tribe or its chief… who just happens to be Hiccup’s father.

However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other Viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter.

But when he encounters (and ultimately befriends) an injured dragon, his world is flipped upside down, and what started out as Hiccup’s one shot to prove himself turns into an opportunity to set a new course for the future of the entire tribe.

New Karate Kid Trailer

The Karate Kid has received a twenty first century make over with Jaden Smith in the central role.

Directed by Harald Zwart, the man behind Pink Panther 2 and Agent Cody Banks and sees Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson are also on the cast list.

12-year-old Dre Parker could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying – and the feeling is mutual – but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible.

Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease.

With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu.

As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Mike Leigh talks To Filmclub

Mike Leigh, whose numerous credits include Happy-Go-Lucky, Vera Drake, BAFTA-winning (and Oscar nominated) Secrets and Lies, Naked and Life is Sweet, took part in a lively Q&A session with 60 FILMCLUB members and Media students.

The students quizzed Mr. Leigh on his successful film career and experiences of working in the film industry for over 40 years.

When students asked the director, who is famed for his unique use of improvisation in his films, whether there was ever a time when he had thought of changing this style to an easier one, Mr. Leigh urged the students to never compromise on what they believe in: “If I have any advice for you it would be not to compromise – what’s the point, you only live once.

“You’ve got to believe in what you care about and where your principles lie. It comes out of a conviction that I want to make films, the way I want to do it. If you start to compromise you’re wasting time, and also I think that if you lose the integrity then you lose the ability.”

Founded in 2008 by film director Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones’ Diary: The Edge Of Reason) and educationalist Lindsay Mackie, FILMCLUB is free to state schools and is fast becoming one of the most popular after-school activities in the country, with over 3,400 schools and 85,000 young people already benefiting from the exposure to inspiring and potentially life changing films every week.

Ruth’s Friday Fumble

Lady GaGa’s latest publicity stunt has backfired as she walked out of a recent magazine photoshoot after bosses at the publication refused to let her don a strap-on in a desperate bid to address rumours she is a hermaphrodite.

Cheryl Cole might have only announced her impending divorce yesterday, but we’re already wondering who she might end up with next. Obviously everyone reckons it’s going to be her dancer friend Derek Hough, simply because he was dragging his dog around to her hotel room in the middle of the night during her time in LA, but quite frankly, I’ve got other ideas.

Speaking of X Factor Folk, whilst Dannii Minogue hasn’t quit the X Factor (although the rumours will probably emerge sometime soon), she will be having her first baby right in the middle of the next series…. So who should fill in for her?

It seems that Johnny Depp has voiced what everyone else was thinking what exactly was the plotline in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End? The actor has admitted that, at times he had no idea what was going on and wants a much simpler story for the fourth Pirates movie.

Colin Farrell appears to be a very harsh critics of his work revealing that he wasn’t a fan of Miami Vice, which he starred in alongside Jamie Foxx. Did anyone see that film? It was bloody awful couldn’t agree with you more Col!
