Has Music Become An Extension Of The Fashion World?

Over the past few weeks I’ve started to become increasingly frustrated that the music business seems to be obsessed with the likes of Justin Bieber and Lady GaGa, when so many bands who work hard and stick to their guns never seem to get the recognition they deserve.

I was chatting to my friend Andy during my rather long coffee break this morning, who is the lovely bassist for the rock band Failsafe (check them out www.myspace.com/failsafemusic) and we got talking about how the trends on the music scene are as interchangeable as the weather these days.

It got me thinking, do you need a stylist and some off the wall marketing technique to be able to make it in the music business these days?

We’ve always knows trends can be quite a fickle thing, what with shoulder pads, neon and dressing like your nan did when she was younger being in and out of fashion more times than I care to remember, but why is it so often the case with modern music?

After hearing the news that my friends in Elias Last Day have called it a day following years of hard work trying to dig their way into the industry, it really frustrated me to know that the bands who really deserve it, really work their nuts off, I mean REALLY work hard lose out to people who dress how Vogue says they should with one hit wonders.

Granted, there are labels out there who give boys like ELD and many of the other Hardcore / Alternative bands a shot, but after pouring bucket loads of their own time, money and heart into making a name for themselves, why don’t they just enter The X Factor and be done with it?

Frankly because half of the bands out there struggling to make their dreams a reality would get laughed out of the X Factor auditions, and I don’t just mean unknown local bands either – if Kids In Glass Houses or The Blackout had strolled up to Simon Cowell, do you think he would have given them a shot? Probably not.

The sad thing these days is that music has become an extention of the fashion industry. You go to a festival and there are celebrities tottering around in £100 dresses with ridiculous footwear, more concerned about the way they look than the epic line-ups on the bill. Why should they get a stage side view, when all they give a damn about is looking great in Heat / NME’s coverage of the festival?

Musical trends come and go just like fashions, and those artists out there who stick to their guns just don’t get the respect they deserve, so I cant make you a success story and I can’t make you a Twitter Trending Topic, but if you’re in a band and you want me to take a listen, post a link to a YouTube video below and I’ll give you a listen.

Wow! All Time Low Become Twitter Trending Topic

Okay, so this isn’t really going to feature on BBC1’s new bulletin tonight, but I’ve gotta say that I’m super excited that American pop punk rockers All Time Low have found themselves as a Twitter Trending Topic.

Whilst Twitter seems to be a way for life these days; orchestrating what’s hot and what’s not, as well as providing a way for celebrities to address rumours and make announcements, so its MASSIVE news to see a guitar-driven band making the hot topics.

For those of you not in the know, a Trending Topic is a subject that a large majority of the people on Twitter are talking about at any given moment. So, Justin Bieber has been a TT since like, forever, and when Jacko popped his clogs, he was a pretty big talking point.

But what have All Time Low done today? As far as I know none of them have died or anything, so they’ve just gotten up there purely on merit, and not the merit of millions of 13 year old girls going hysterical at the mere sight of them. (although they probably to TBF)

Anyway, I’m on my coffee break and I thought I’d share my joy with you all rather than just sit here at my desk and become a Facebook Stalker. Who else is excited? Oh, and if you know their online PR… get in touch. I’ll look after my coffee break, but you could save me a job.

Stephen Gately : One Of Ireland’s Greatest People – Is It Cos I’m Dead?

Stephen Gately’s death was an utter tragedy, there’s no denying that, but why is it that people only ever seem to be ’recognised’ or honoured once they are dead? Like the Nightwish lyric “You’re not a hero unless you die” it seems that you can’t be great until you’re dead.

Now, I know that’s not always the case – mainly because Bono is amongst the names who have joined late Thin Lizzy icon Phil Lynott at the top of a new list of Ireland’s greatest people, but still, Stephen Gately… really?

Now, before you all start writing hatemail in the comments box, listen to what I’ve got to say… the list was compiled by bosses at broadcasting network RTE after they asked Irish radio listeners and TV viewers to vote for their favourite local heroes from a list of 40. But do we really think Stephen Gately would have been on the list had he still been alive? Probably not.

[picappgallerysingle id="6778359"]

That’s the problem with things like that you see, people never seem to get the recognition they rightly deserve until it’s too late. Personally I did Steo right when I was in school and had him plastered all over my pencil case thanks to those stickers that came free with Smash Hits! Magazine, but it’s it a bit late for all this now?

After 12 days of public voting, the shortlist has been reduced to 10 names which now includes political figures like Michael Collins, Dr. Noel Browne, John Connolly and President Mary Robinson and the Irish icons who make up the final top five, will become the subject of five new documentaries.

So, when Ireland’s Greatest person is announced on Ireland’s top talk show, The Late Late Show, in October, who reckons Stephen will win? Don’t get us wrong, we think Stephen Gately is fantastic, but had he still been alive, would he have been on the list?

New A-Team Trailer

The A-Team could just be one of the funniest movies of the summer, I know I’m looking forward to it.

Directed by Joe Carnahan the movie brings together a great cast of Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Jessica Biel and Patrick Wilson.

A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed.

And while TV shows don’t always adapt well on the big screen, lets face it Charlie’s Angels and The Avengers were just awful, but, with any luck, The A-Team could be the movie that bucks that trend.

The A-Team is released 30th July. Take a look at the new trailer for the movie:
