Superfood: Apple

With more than 7,500 varities, you’re bound to found one that you like. And you most definitely should, the superfood that is the apple is great for number of different reasons. As you all know, an apple a day will keep the doctor away.

The apple tree originated in Western Asia and it is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits. In 2005 an amazing 55 million tonnes of apples were grown worldwide, it’s not surprising when you consider that just one provides a quarter of your daily recommended intake of vitamin C, which promotes healthy skin and gums.

The best thing about the apple is even though it’s good for you and provides a whole host of nutrients, you can still enjoy it with the bad stuff, in apple pies or crumbles and know that on some level you are being healthy.

Apples contain a form of soluble fibre called pectin which lowers blood cholesterol levels, eating fibre also helps to regulate bowel movements and keeps you fuller for longer. So eating an apple in between meals will help to reduce your appetite naturally. Great if you need some help to stop your hand looking for the biscuit tin. Low fibre diets have also been proven to reduce the risk of developing heart disease.

Don’t ditch the skin on the apple though, as it contains two to six times the amount of antioxidant activity.

The low glycaemic index in an apple means that they are digested slowly and gradually rise the blood sugar levels, as opposed to a chocolate which rises it instantly and leaves you craving more sweet things later on, and they only have an average of 47 calories. If you can find a chocolate bar with that little, please do share.

How are you going to eat more apples this week? Will it be part of a treat or on its own, let us know in the comments box below.

Antonia Burrell’s top tips for keeping skin supple this winter…

Antonia Burell’s Top Tips for avoid dry skin while having the heating on this winter:

Antonia highlights the effects of central heating on your skin:

Sitting indoors with the central heating on full whack will leave your skin feeling dry, rough and tight. When the heating is too high, water will come out of your skin and evaporate into the atmosphere

Dry skin not only feels bad – it is also more prone to wrinkles and will appear ashy and dull. No one wants skin that looks like crepe paper!

Antonia’s tips for preventing problems:

Sleep with your heating off at night if possible. If you can, use a timer as well so that your heating switches on when you come home from work for a couple of hours, then switches on again in the morning. This will not only help you to save energy and money, it’ll also protect your skin from dehydration

If you feel you really do need your heating on during the night, turn the thermostat down. To prevent skin dehydration, consider putting a beauty bowl into your living room and bedroom. This is essentially a decorative bowl filled with water which will evaporate into the air with the heat of the room. If the air is more humid, less moisture will be lost from your skin

Drinking lots of water is always a good idea – pure water is best. To stave off the shivers, try warm water with a slice of lemon or a herbal tea to give your water a bit of flavour without detracting from its rehydrating goodness! Aim to drink 8-12 glasses of water a day

Make sure your skin is nourished – you can do this by using a hydrating mask and facial oils

Antonia’s top tips:

Got your heating on full? Consider turning the temperature down – not only will it cost you less but it’ll stop the heat from sapping all of the hydration from your skin. The optimum room temperature is between 18 and 21 degrees

To avoid chapped lips, use a lip balm or a nice moisturising lip-gloss. Lipsticks are not as hydrating, so go for the sassy, glossy finish to hydrate as well as add a flash of colour!

To repair damaged and dry skin, use hydrating masks to replace lost moisture to your skin

You should adapt your beauty regime to the seasons – opt for facial oils and toners without alcohol in the winter months to keep your skin moisturised and supple

Exfoliate twice a week to maintain healthy, glowing skin

Drink a large glass of water before you go to bed (a whole pint if you can manage it!) – or if you’re feeling the cold, have a camomile tea

New Trailer For The Iron Lady

I have been a big fan of Meryl Steep for many years as she is one of the most versatile and talented actresses that currently graces the big screen.

And in the new year she will be back with one of her biggest roles to date… she is set to play Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Yes this role is already being ear-marked for a Best Actress Oscar nomination as the film marks Maggie’s rise to power and the struggles that she faced.

The movie reunites Streep with Mamma Mia director Phyllida Lloyd and brings together a superb cast that includes Jim Broadbent, Anthony Head, Richard E Grant, and Olivia Colman.

The Iron Lady is released 6th January. Take a look at the new trailer for the movie:

Carnage UK Trailer

When you see Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and John C Reilly all on the same cast list you know that this is a movie that you have got to see.

And that is exactly the line-up we have got for Roman Polanski’s latest movie Carnage – which has been well received already on the festival circuit.

A showdown between two kids about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth…

Now the parents of the ‘victim’ have invited the parents of the ‘bully’ to their apartment to sort it out.

Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage.

Carnage is released 3rd February.
