Is late-fatherhood a blessing or selfish parenting?

Alec Baldwin and Hilaria ThomaThere has been a swarm of late-bloomer dads in celebville recently, with 72-year-old Peter Stringfellow revealing that his young wife is expecting their baby, and actor Steve Martin becoming a first-time dad at 67. We ask, is having a child at an old age a life blessing or is it a selfish decision on behalf of the parents?

Traditionally, it has always been a woman’s age that is considered a risk factor for becoming a parent, but it seems that many older men are finding themselves changing diapers and decorating nurseries, when most are almost bed-pan-ready themselves.

So, what is the trigger for the recent mature fatherhood flourish?

My answer: young wives. Very young wives. Women young enough to be daughters and, in some cases, granddaughters, are shacking up with older men – a topic that deserves its own  blog post – and naturally, these women are craving motherhood, duping their other half to believe that having a child means ‘there is life in the old dog yet’.

In my eyes this is wrong. Wrong on so many levels. Aside from the numerous health risks that come with late-parenthood, it simply isn’t right or fair on the child that their father will most probably be bed-bound or in the ground before they hit their teenage years. Unless, obviously, their father is Hugh Hefner who, even though, is still going strong at 86, isn’t silly enough to be getting his young wife pregnant (yet!).

Let’s face it, more and more celebrity couples with a gaping age difference are getting together nowadays; Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Thomas (26-year age gap), Peter Stringfellow and Bella (42-year age gap), Steve Martin and Anne Stringfield (26-year age gap), Bruce Willis and Emma Hemming (23-year age gap) and the list goes on.

And every one of the men in these relationships has just become a dad again, whereas in the case of comedian-actor Steve Martin, he has become a first-time dad at 67. Just why?

Taryn Davies, FemaleFirst’s Fashion, Beauty and Health Editor, says: “Whilst I do think it’s selfish in some sense, we live in a different era now.

“More and more people are waiting to have children and I think it can be dependent on circumstance. But, 67, that is a little old, isn’t it!?”

Yes it is. It’s three years from 70. It’s the age where retirees take long cruises and spend their days playing golf. And it definitely isn’t the age to be taking your newborn baby for a stroll in the park. No way.

Cameron Smith, FemaleFirst’s (sensible) Music Editor agrees: “I don’t really think it’s that fair. How are they going to help the kids through the tougher parts of young adult life when they’re knocking on the door of eighty?

“Also, childcare is exhausting for young couples, so I can’t imagine the levels of tired that Steve Martin’s going to be feeling.” Neither can I Cameron.

Let’s back track to the health risks. Scientific American reported that large parental age differences increase the risk for psychiatric disorders in children. The report said: “Males may have the advantage of lifelong fertility, but as they grow older, the rate of genetic mutations passed on via their sperm cells increases significantly—putting their children at increased risk for psychiatric disorders, especially autism and schizophrenia.”

A theory that is also discussed and largely supported by the work of Allan Pacey, Chairman of the British Fertility Society, who writes in The Guardian: “We can only issue seemingly obvious advice that becoming a father under the age of 40 is probably better for the health of your children than waiting until you are older.”

Good advice. Makes perfect sense to me.

The truth of the matter is that these older men probably relish becoming fathers again at such a late age, and the unfair part is that many probably see it as a challenge to tackle at this stage in their life.

I do not doubt that these men can provide love and care for their children as any other younger father would, merely the stunted life-span with which they decide to enter fatherhood.

Not having a dad around for the most part of your life, because he just happened to be old enough to be your grandpa when you were born is, simply, selfish parenting. End of.

“Are these the sickest baby clothes ever” – I say Yes

Tasteless, inappropriate and just down right tacky – that’s what I thought when I saw the Fifty Shades of Grey-themed baby clothes on the Daily Mail website today (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2228505/Im-product-Fifty-Shades-Grey-baby-clothes-appear-online.html).

The global sales of the Fifty Shades trilogy has exceeded 40 million (still no idea why, the book is quite badly written) and millions are going crazy for the ‘mommy porn’ series which has led to a number of offshoot commercial ventures, including the Official Lovehoney Collection, approved by the author, E.L James, herself.

That’s fine – a collection of sex toys based on a near awful, seemingly dark and absolutely twisted plot (which only spans the length of a couple of wasted years) – a commercial venture that the millions of fans will buy into, and rightly so, after all that is what the trilogy is about – sex, and lots of it.

But to link a line of baby clothes to such a story is just plain wrong. The clothes, being sold on popular fashion site, Etsy, include bibs and onsies displaying popular sayings from the books such as ‘Laters Baby’ and ‘I’m Lil Blip’ as well as distasteful phrases like ‘My mommy pretends Christian Gray is my Daddy’, ‘I’m a product of Fifty Shades of Grey’ and ‘Grey Generation’. This is simply not cool. As one Daily Mail reader commented: “This says, ‘My parents had to read a lame boring book to get enough mojo on to be able to have a decent root’.”

And I couldn’t agree more, this baby clothes range is disgusting, just like the book, and exploits children on a whole new level. No child is a by-product and a baby should not be treated as a spin-off to anything – no matter how famous or commercially-viable the idea is, money-making pursuits should not overstep the border to tacky, and these baby clothes have definitely gone tacky and beyond.

The happiest point on Christmas day…

The happiest point of Christmas Day is 1.55pm, it has been revealed.

A study into our happiness levels on one of the biggest days of the year shows most people are so worried about things running smoothly they don’t truly enjoy themselves until early afternoon.

People are only 100 per cent happy once the presents have been opened, dinner has been cooked and served, and the children have excitedly opened their stockings.

Other factors which contribute to an afternoon and evening of fun and festivity include realising everyone is happy with what they have been given for Christmas, and having that first tipple of the day.

The report shows the initial stress is more than worth it – as over half of those polled say Christmas Day is their favourite holiday and a third say it’s the happiest day of the year.

A spokesman for Three Barrels Brandy, which commissioned the study of 2,000 people, said:

“A lot of thought and effort goes into each and every Christmas, and people work hard to make it special and create memories that will last a lifetime.

“Christmas morning tends to be a rush in most households – mums are struggling with the dinner, children are unwrapping presents, and dads are finding batteries to go in the toys.

“It’s important to try and enjoy those more hectic moments as well, as these often make the funniest Christmas memoires and will be told at Christmas’ for years to come.”

Understandably, three quarters of those polled claim the Christmas dinner is largely responsible for any stress endured on the morning of the 25th.

Ensuring all foods are cooked and ready at the same time provides endless worry for mums and dads up and down the country.

But once dinner is on the table, 56 per cent of people reach their happiest point of the day. But when it comes to being even happier at Christmas, 36 per cent say they would feel more relaxed and content if they were able to celebrate with just their immediate family.

A further third would prefer it if someone else could cater for them on the 25th December, while 27 per cent relish the thought of being able to put their feet up all day long.

Other items on the Christmas happiness ‘wish list’ were having a personal shopper to get all the presents, ditching the Christmas roast for an easier option and naturally getting more presents. One in five said Christmas would be better if only the children would just sleep in a bit longer.

But despite a lack of sleep it seems family time is what counts on Christmas Day – a staggering 71 per cent said that’s what it’s all about for them.

The spokesman for Three Barrels Brandy added “It’s sometimes easy to get carried away with the planning and worry that comes with arranging Christmas, and before you know it it’s been and gone.

“On Christmas Day, most adults are more concerned about creating a happy day for everyone else, but it is important that people can enjoy the holiday for themselves as well.”

Quarter of mums buy and wrap their own gifts

It’s a time for buying gifts, giving them and receiving them. But for a quarter of mums out there, they will be buying and wrapping their own presents from their children and partners.

The survey, conducted by Argos and YouGov, revealed that 31 per cent of mums start preparing for Christmas before October and more than half buy between 11 and 50 presents in total at Christmas, while 67 per cent receive 10 or less in return.

Nearly one in five mums spends more than 24 hours in total shopping for Christmas presents, so it’s no wonder then that 48 per cent say they find Christmas shopping a tiring experience.

In recognition of all of their hard work Argos is opening the Mums’ Grotto for one day in central London on Saturday 26 November.

Visitors to the Grotto will be able to meet special ‘celebrity Santa’, TV presenter and mums’ favourite Jeff Brazier, who will be asking the mums what’s on their Christmas lists. As well as meeting ‘Santa’ the mums will be able to indulge in pampering treats, including massages and mini-makeovers, enjoy aglass of bubbly and go away with a special gift from Argos.

Jeff Brazier says: “It’s nice to be able to celebrate mums at a time of year that can be very focused on children. I’m looking forward to being able to treat some of the mums who spend months preparing to make Christmas a magical time for their families.”

Carl Nield, Brand Development Manager at Argos says: “Mums can be the unsung heroes of Christmas so we wanted to do something to recognise their efforts. We hope to make them smile on Saturday with some presents from our Christmas gift guide and pampering treats from our range of health and beauty products.”

The Argos Mums’ Grotto will be open from 9.30am to 4.00pm on Saturday 26 November at 7 Berners Mews, London W1T 3AN. For priority entry, mums can Tweet @Argos_Online #mumsgrotto and let us know what would be the ultimate treat for them this Christmas.

Laura’s Baby Diary : Week 37

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year… I ate far too much and here I am wondering why nothing fits me!

At 37 weeks pregnant, babies are considered full term, so if the baby decides to make an early appearance it wouldn’t be considered premature, which always makes you feel more confident about the birth.

I am booked in to have my C-Section in two weeks time and I am really starting to get excited about the whole thing. I have packed baby their own little bag, as well as myself a bag packed full of things for my hospital stay, as well as my lovely Yummy Mummy bag.

Baby clearly has more things packed than I do; he/she has lots of lovely outfits, but I will be sticking to the comfortable – however unflattering – pyjamas!

Our daughter is already looking forward to meeting her brother or sister, she has been very much involved in everything and we have bought her a special present to open from baby so she doesn’t feel left out.

I have started to ‘nest’ and get things ready for baby coming and I am driving my husband mad because I am becoming a bit OCD about everything being clean and tidy, which is slightly impossible with a three year old!

Time to rest up I think and relax.

Laura’s Baby Diary : Weeks 31-32

Well baby will be making his / her debut appearance in a few weeks time and I have been washing all their little clothes and making up their bed in preparation… everything is beginning to come together now, apart from the nursery looking like Santa’s Grotto!

With a very excitable three year old and lots of Christmas parties to attend (she has a better social life than me!), I am beginning to feel the strain of a large bump and little time to rest.

However, I have been finding time to get lots of nice warm baths and look after myself a little bit and I am starting to moisturise the bump a lot to steer off the stretch marks… I have to say I haven’t really noticed any at the moment so it seems to be working.

The weather has kept us in the house more than I would’ve liked so I have been eating my way through lots of food – which I probably wouldn’t eat under normal circumstances – and have found myself looking a little larger than usual!

If you’re like me, now the snow has gone and you want to get out and about, please be careful of the ice and don’t be too proud to ask for help from people.

Laura’s Baby Diary : Weeks 30-31

Things are going good here in expectant mum land, but with Christmas approaching rapidly, it’s getting difficult to steer away from the chocolate and mince pies! I am occupying my time doing lots of Christmas shopping whilst my husband is working away in the vain attempt to still feel festive, but without the expanding (non-pregnancy) waistline.

A few things have happened in my personal life this week, and I must admit, it has been hard to focus on keeping the stress levels down and concentrating on looking after myself, but luckily my little girl is keeping me busy and always manages to make me smile when she kisses my bump.

On a happier note though, I graduated last week! Whoopie! It was two years of hard work but it was worth it in the end, and what a lovely day it was! Obviously, it was hard to find something that fitted, but it was nice to have a day out and see some good friends who had worked just as hard.

So, with only a few weeks left until baby arrives I have started to nest; I keep cleaning things that really don’t need cleaning, moving things around and generally can’t keep still for two minutes, when really I should have my feet up! I’ve got to admit, it is nice to keep busy, although I am still in bed by 8pm every night!

So if like me, you can’t keep still, give the list of jobs to a willing volunteer and get resting, it is Christmas after all…

Laura’s Baby Diary : Week 28-29

I had my midwife appointment this week, which inevitably meant even more blood tests, but luckily everything is fine and the bump is growing at an unquestionable rate of knotts.

During my appointment I was given all the information for maternity benefits, so I thought I’d share them with you all: Anyone – regardless of income – are entitled to a £190 grant from the government, called the ‘Health in Pregnancy Grant’.

Also, if you are employed, self-employed or recently employed, make sure you apply for Statutory Maternity Pay or if you are not entitled you can apply Maternity Allowance, just ask your midwife for your MATB1.

In other news, now the weather has changed and nothing particularly fits me, I have decided to invest in a few pairs of maternity trousers because leggings can’t keep me warm for much longer no matter how comfortable they are! I also need some sensible footwear, so if anyone has any ideas then pass them on, because the Scottish weather is already freezing!

I seem to be losing my appetite too, eating little and often is better at the moment because there isn’t much room for a baby and food, which is a shame sometimes when we go out for meals.

If you need any more information about what benefits you are entitled to in pregnancy then visit www.direct.gov.uk.

Laura’s Baby Diary : Week 26

So, we’re at week 26 and my heartburn is beginning to irritate me, every meal and sometimes just drinking  can set me off! I have tried to avoid spicy foods and carbonated drinks, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference, I mean, even eating cereal leaves me in pain! I have a huge bottle of heartburn relief liquid that is kept
with me at all times.

Speaking of medication, I have started to moisturise everyday to try and avoid the stretch marks, Asda have their own brand of stretch mark oil which is loads cheaper than other brands that are on offer and leaves your skin feeling lovely and soft. I have even been using it on my hands now the winter is here!

When (like me) you get into your third trimester it is time you started to relax, although the nesting instinct kicks in and you want to clean everything! All I can say is, make sure you take heed and relax because swollen ankles and aching joints are not much fun when you are carrying the extra weight.
