Congratulations To British Oscar Nominees

The Academy Awards is the not only the highlight of the film year but it is the biggest prize that can be bestowed on a film or an individual.

The 2013 nominations were revealed earlier this week and there are a whole host of Brits in the mix for some big prizes.

British film Les Miserables was one of the big nomination winners as it picked up eight nods in some of the biggest categories.

Directed by Tom Hooper the movie is from Working Title and has enjoyed both critical acclaim as well as box office success since its release.

The movie has picked up a Best Picture nod and will go head to head with Lincoln, Life of Pi, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Armour, Silver Linings and Beasts of the Southern Wild

Hooper may have been overlooked in the Best Director category Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway were amongst the acting talent that were recognised.

Anna Karenina was another Working Title movie that also picked up nominations as it was recognised in four categories; cinematography, costume design, original score and production design.

While there was sadly no Best Picture nod for Skyfall the movie did pick up five nominations; cinematography, sound mixing sound editing, original score and original song.

The original song nomination sees Adele thrown into the mix as she wrote Skyfall along with Paul Epworth.

They will go up against tracks from Chasing Ice, Ted, Life of Pi and Les Miserables.

Daniel Day Lewis was the only British actor to receive an acting nomination as he was given the nod for his performance in Lincoln.

The movie sees him take on the title role and he is looking to make it a trio of Best actor wins after receiving gongs for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood.

As well as all these nods for British talent Bond’s 50th anniversary will be recognised and celebrated at the ceremony.

Congratulations to the all the British nominees and fingers crossed that they will bring home some big prizes.

Skyfall Trailer With Adele Theme

It was revealed last week that Adele was the artist who had been chosen to sing the theme tune to new Bond movie Skyfall – let’s face it it was one of the worst kept secret.

Nonetheless the song has been revealed and it has already been added to a new trailer for the movie.

Daniel Craig is back as 007 for his third outing as the super spy while Sam Mendes is helming his first Bond movie.

Judi Dench is another of the familiar faces while Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes are just two members of a very exciting cast.

Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Skyfall is released 26th October.

UK Rock Music is Alive and Well

So, a while back The Guardian posted an article that spoke about the death of rock music, noting poor performances in the charts as a reason behind the assessment.

Thankfully, some of our favourite UK rock bands are proving this to be nothing more than ignorance and stupidity.

Whether it’s news at You Me At Six have debuted in the Top 3 of the Album Charts, or that acoustic folk-punk star Frank Turner will be headlining Wembley Arena next spring, there’s a lot of evidence to prove that the UK rock scene is thriving.

Sure, album sales generally are down (unless you happen to be Adele or have the backing of a huge label), but rock music (in its heart) was never really about mainstream acceptance.

Still, seeing several Top 40 charts on various weeks this year littered with names like Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters proves that rock music can (and will) survive the recent trend of over-produced pop and mindless lyrics.

It’s not just bands as big as those, though, who are making a dent – The King Blues managed to break into the Top 40 with their recent effort Punk & Poetry, with sound that is a far cry from the usual artists who grace the charts.

Of course, this should be taken with a pinch of salt – Frank Turner hit Number 12 earlier this year, but slowly dropped out.

That’s how it works – artists with a huge fan-base (or PR campaign) like Adele will constantly be selling 10,000 copies each and every week, whereas these lesser-known rock acts will have a strong first week as their loyal fan-base picks it up.

It’s still very encouraging, though, and it shows that maybe not everyone is interested in the latest reality TV star or pop act.

There’s a lot to enjoy and discover out there, from the likes of Your Demise and Enter Shikari to The Blackout and You me At Six.

Thankfully, these bands are starting to get recognition for their talents, and as the emphasis of the music industry shifts to the live environment, more of these bands will excel.

Ruth’s Monday Meltdown

Alex Reid does talk about himself a fair amount in the Celebrity Big Brother house doesn’t he? And his latest bout of dialogue has left me with a bit of a sick taste in my mouth. Speaking once again about his ‘fame’, he told his housemates; “Fame is not something I crave, because I’ve realised it’s the double-edged sword that it is.” Err, so WHY are you in the Celebrity Big Brother house then Alex?

Fans of the phenomenal R&B pop sensation, Justin Bieber, have now got the chance to meet him IN PERSON as he heads over to London! *SCREAM!!!* What would YOU ask him?

Congratulations to Ellie Goulding , who looks set to follow in the footsteps of Mika, Adele, Keane and Little Boots after coming out on top of the BBC Sound of 2010 list.
