Gangster Squad Banners

Gangster Squad has one of the best ensemble casts of 2013 as it hits the big screen in January.

Sean Penn is set to lead that cast while Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Pena and Nick Nolte are all set to star.

Ruben Fleischer is in the director’s chair for the film in what is only his third feature film at the helm.

The movie reunites him with Stone after the pair worked together on Zombieland back in 2009.

Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago.

And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control.

It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

Gangster Squad is released 11th January 2013.

Tree Of Life Trailer

The Tree of Life caused quite a stir at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year – some liked it, some didn’t – but it went on to win the Palme d’Or anyway.

The movie marks the return of filmmaker Terrance Malick as he reunites with Thin Red Line actor Sean Penn. The movie also stars Brad Pitt as well as Jessica Chastain and Hunter McCracken.

Malick’s first film in six years, The Tree Of Life is a hymn to life, excavating answers to the most haunting and personal human questions through a kaleidoscope of the intimate and the cosmic, from the raw emotions of a family in a small Texan town to the wildest, infinite edges of space and time, from a boy’s loss of innocence to a man’s transforming encounters with awe, wonder and transcendence.

An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950′s, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and the meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.

Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

The Tree of Life is released 8th July. Take a look at the trailer for the movie:

Tree Of Life Clips

Tree of Life sees Terrence Malick return to the director’s chair for the first time since The New World back in 2005.

In fact this latest project is just his third movie in the thirteen years – The Thin Red Line coming in 1998.

The film sees him reunite with Sean Penn as well as work with Oscar nominee Brad Pitt for the very first time.

We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does, with the eyes of his soul.

She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way, of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims.

The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

Framing this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part.

When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.

The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family, our first school, the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life’s single most important lesson, of unselfish love.

Fair Game Images

Sean Penn and Naomi Watts are two of the best actor currently working in Hollywood and they team up for the third time for their new project Fair Game.

As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie (Naomi Watts) leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Valerie’s husband, diplomat Joe Wilson (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger.

But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and igniting a firestorm of controversy.

Soon after, Valerie’s covert status is reported by a high-profile Washington journalist. With her cover blown and her overseas contacts placed in mortal danger, Valerie is pushed to the breaking point as her career and private life collapse.

After years serving the government, Valerie–a mother, a wife and a field officer with an impeccable record–now struggles to save her reputation, her career and her family.

Based on a true story Fair Game is released later this year as Doug Liman returns to the director’s chair. Take a look at some images from the movie:

Cannes Day 3

Cannes Film Festival is famed for bringing hard hitting movies to a wider audience with such a film last year 4month, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a Romanian picture about illegal abortion.

And after the hype of Kung Fu Panda has ebbed away this year is no different as Friday featured two pictures that may hit a raw nerve with Cannes cinema go-ers.

First up Sean Penn used his position as head of the Film Festival jury to back new documentary The Third Wave.

With the likes of Natalie Portman and controversial filmmaker Michael Moore at it’s premiere on Friday The Third Wave, directed by Alison Thompson is a low budget documentary filmed by those who went to volunteer in Sri Lanka in 2004 after the tsunami.

The film focuses on three volunteers who, without the aid of the government, began the clean-up operation by looking for bodies and setting up their own infirmary.

The second film to shake up the Cannes audience was Ari Folman’s animation Waltz With Bashir.

 waltz with bashire

This Israeli picture depicts the massacre of the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon in 1982.

The film’s main character is director Ari Folman himself who realises that there are major parts of his life, his experience as an Israeli soldier during the Lebanon war of the eighties, missing from his memory.

Ari decides to meet up with old friends and comrades to discover the truth about this time and about himself.

Folman unflinchingly depicts what young men do in a time of war and the atrocities of which humans are capable as well as pointing the finger at those he deems responsible.

Despite not having American distribution when premiered Waltz With Bashir is in the running for the Palme d’or.
