have been on the implant since feb 07 and although it was fine at first - no periods. after about 3months i started getting periods for 3weeks at a time but only every couple of months. Since jan 08 have been gettin 3 week long periods every month!

Have now booked an appointment with the doctor to see about having it removed.

As stated in a previous post by someone they mentioned paranoia etc. I have experienced this but thought it was due to changes in my life (moving house/changing jobs) will be interesting to see what happens when i have the implant removed.

Just found this forum while searching for any info on swelling around the implanon insertion site. Up to page 17 and nothing specifically about this yet, but thought I'd share my experience anyway (it's very positive, other than the recent development!)

I had my first implanon inserted in April 2005. Very light spotting for the first two months and then absolutely no periods for the remainder of the three years. No weight change - I've been around 8.1-8.4 stone for the duration, though lost some muscle tone over this time as don't work out as often as I used to. This meant that while the implanon was quite visible at first (which my GP said was unusual), it was more 'submerged' by the end! I didn't feel depressed. I do sometimes have anxiety attacks but don't think this is related to the implant.

Anyway, I had no qualms about going to have a second implant put in this month, when the three years was pretty much up. The GP had some trouble removing the old implant as she couldn't fish it out. Getting the new one in was fine though. But she warned me there'd be quite a lot of swelling because of the digging around she'd had to do (none of this was painful, by the way). But 10 days later, I have a really prominent and worrying looking lump around the insertion site. The scar itself is small and neat, but it's sitting on top of a very noticable and hard lump. Not very painful, and just my normal flesh colour, which is also curious. I'm wondering if it's a lump of scar tissue or whether there's some infection below the surface.

I'm going to go back to the doctors on Monday but was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar?

I have had the implant in for 7 months now and i really wish i had read this forum before i got it! Twisted Evil I have gained 2 stone since September, when i got it, i am at the gym 4 times a week and eat healthily but the weight will not shift. I must say i have had no periods which has been great but i have put all of the weight on my middle. I am getting it removed finally on friday and cannot wait!! My doctor prescribed me obesity pills before suggesting removing the implant!! You just need to call your local family planning clinic if you want it removed. I am getting married in January and am hoping the weight starts to shift when the implant goes!! Very Happy

Hi

I had the implant put in sometime in January since then i have put on nearly 2 stone, my moods have been awful and if i am not snapping at anyone in close proximity, i am crying.
My skin is awful i have not suffered with acne since i was 16 and that was 14 years ago. I was considering having the implant out but after reading everyones experiences it has made my mind up.

Can anyone tell me if they have have muscle pains and headaches from the implant?

Over the past three years I have fell deeper and deeper into depression due to my weight. I went on the minipill when I was 15 which didn't effect my weight but I have real trouble swollowing pills. this resulted in me getting pregnant at 16. After much thought I had a termination and was told my only contraceptive option was the "injection". Each injection lasts three months and I had two of these and in 6 months I put on over three stones!

With such a drastic weight gain I was told to give the new implant a try, which I did and now no matter what I do i cant shift any of the weight that I have gained.

My emotions are now all over the place and I find myself crying if we run out of washing powder!!!

Do you find your hormones are varied with the implant?

Hi Just thought I would reply with my input on the whole Implant debate!!
I got the Implant in last year and thought it was great, light periods lasting no more than a few days then i went on holiday and it lasted for a full 2 weeks, since then it has gradually gotten worse.l
I am not haveing a period once ever 5 weeks and im presently lasting for approx 4 weeks and its really starting to get to me.
I havent put on any weight with this but my hair comes out in clumps when i wash it.
Thinking about asking for it to be removed but the pill doesnt agree with me and makes me very grumpy and depressed
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

Hi sounds like you're having a rubbish time on it too. I had nearly all the symptoms on here - weight gain, breast tenderness and massive growth(3 cup sizezs),moodiness, crying all the time, over sensitive and emotional, tiredness, hair coming out in clumps, depression, almost constant periods.......the list goes on and on! I went on the pill initially but I wasn't 100% at remembering to take it so I thought the implant would be a good idea. I was wrong! I finally had it removed yesterday having put up with it and hoping it would settle down since August (it's now april). I didn't want to go back on the pill as I wanted to come away from artificial hormones all together and try to get my body back to normal. The Dr at the family plannng clinic recommended the diaphram. You do have to have it fitted, but there are no hormones involved, you don't have to keep going to the doctors for check ups or repeat prescriptions etc, and most importantly you are in control of it - you can remove it yourself! It's not as reliable as the pill - 96% instead of 99.8% according to the leaflet- but if I do get pregnant now it wouldn't be the end of the world, and it's a lot better than nothing, so I'm giving it a try. My friend had the same sort of problems as I have had too. I know the doctors always say persevere, but I really think if you have had it for 6 months and it is still not working, give up! It took me an afternoon of crying on the sofa because someone had told me I was good at my job (!) to really apreciate how bad it had got! I wote down all the symptoms I had and rang the family planning line. They were great and really helpful. They said that I really had given it long enough, that it wasn't agreeing with me and to have it removed. It took nearly 2 more months to actually have it taken out. I don't know if it is psychosematic, but I woke up this morning earlier and more awake than I have been in ages. Fingers crossed that it will carry on! I really hope this is helpful. Good luck with finding alternatives.

P.S.Just so you know the marina coil also contains hormones.

Hiya,
i had my implant in two days after my 17th birthday in 2004, they told me i had to be on my period, but i wanted it as soon as i herd about it, so we booked a date when i estimated when i would start my period.

The day that i went to have it i wasnt on my period so i lied and said i was anyway! Since then i have a period every 3 weeks, and it lasts for 3 weeks, and there VERY heavy! Does any one know if thats because i wasnt on my period when i had my implant??

It doesnt realy bother me as much as it does my fiance!

No its not becaus eyou were not on your period. One of the reasons they do that is to assure your not pregnant already. Implanon messes up most peoples cycle. It may settle down by itself. The Drs will probably tell you to keep going with it. If it really affects you though and if you are having other symptoms I would seriously think abot finding another form of contraception. My experience of implanol was awful. I had just about every one f the side affects I have found listed and I kept waitinf for it to settle down for ages. I have now had it removed. If you want further advice you could ring the familt planning line. That way you don't have to go back to your docs!

I got the implant in oct 05, after having a baby. I had never used contraception before as i never had a 'proper' boyfriend, so no need. Before havingbaba, my periods were as regular as the milkman and had been since my very first one and it seems to have carried on with the implant, which im not over the moon about as I would have liked a break from them. Everything seemed to be going fine, I was a little naive in thinking, that when my doctor told me there would be no side effects, i thought there would be no side effects.

And there were none, until my periods began to change, they became irregular and lasted a couple of weeks at a time, I started to gain weight (i've made no changes to what I was eating, and I was actually exercising properly:)but I've put on about 2stone in 8months, it seems to be impossible to lose. I also have terrible, almost constant headaches. I hadnt really noticed a change in my moods, until my partner sat me down and told me he thought i might be bipolar, because i was up and down like a yoyo. Sometimes I was quite manic, and it would last all week and others Id get over-upset when i didnt get a cuddle!! I didnt do fits of tears over nothing, i just was unhappy. On the plus side, it has done nothing to dampen my high sex drive Smile

Noone i know has the implant, so I had no one to talk to, my doc is an idiot. So i popped on to google today and found this site, after reading all the posts, Im glad to know im not alone, but feel rather stupid that i hadnt researched properly before now, the implant is due to come out in oct this year. I dont know if i should get a second implant, give it another try, as it hasnt been too terrible for me, its manageable - just, unlike for some folk on here. But i had been looking at cerazette - the mini pill, I was thinking that might be an option. I was wondering if anyone had changed from the implant to the mini pill, and had any stories to share good or bad!!

Thanks

I finally had my implant removed on Thursday YIPPEE Laughing and even though i am still a touch emotional and moody i still feel better just knowing that it is out! Just have to wait now for the acne to clear up and some of the weight to shift and after 2 weeks on weight watchers and only 3lb lost i'm hoping it will speed up now the demon rod has been removed!
Don't let the doctors talk you out of having it removed if you really know yourself that it is the root of your problems! Even on the day of having it removed they were still trying to convince me that it probably wasn't down to the implant and that my acne (after having flawless skin for 26 years) was normal and that rather than blame the implant for my constant crying attacks and nasty crabby moods I should look at other areas in my life that may be bothering me. She was damn lucky I was having a 'good' day as I would probably have ripped her face off if it was one of my 'bad' days.
I was told by one doctor that the hormone should be out of my system in 48hrs and another told me 5 days, it has been 3 days and I am still weepy but have a strange sense of calm about me (until the fella gets home no doubt lol).

Hey skinnymoo,

I had my implant removed on thursday too!!! I know exactly what you mean about doctors and nurses trying to dissuade you!!! I dont know why, its not like me dont give it a fair chance (18months for me).

Anyway, did you gain any weight on it? I'm dieting currently and hoping to shift some of the 3 stone i gained!!!

I know how you feel about having it removed, its like a huge weight lifted, i still feel a bit up and down but am generally more positive now. My libido has also returned after a long absence!!!

It has been a relief to find this website as now I don't feel like I am alone with my problems with the implant. I have gained weight and I feel bloated all the time.

There has been a massive increase in cup size from 32D to 32F (although I have no complaints from my husband there!!) However breasts are so sore and tender most of the time. I also have suffered with abdominal pain although this has been occasional.

The biggest problem I have found is with my moods, they are up and down all the time and a lack of sex drive too. I never put down the spots or hair loss down to the imlanon, but now I have read some of your comments on here it all makes sense! I am seriously considering having it removed now as although I haven't had a period being on it, all the other symptoms are really getting me down.

My doctor has presribed me with the mini pill to take as well as having the implant, this has made a difference to some of the symptons, but not enough to continue with it.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, its been a real help to me. Very Happy

I'm glad I found this website as I thought I was going a bit mad...! I had the implant put in just over 2 months ago & I have to admit, I didn't feel right as soon as it was put in. The best way I can describe it is feeling like I'm in someone else's body - I keep getting paranoid about my relationship with my fella although things are fine (and were great before) but I keep worrying about things. The random crying seems to have stopped now but I just don't feel 'right'. The spots I'm getting are a bit of a nightmare and my sex drive's almost non-existent. Sad
I'm in 2 minds whether to get it taken out or not as it's so convenient, and the side effects aren't quite as bad as when I first had it put in but I'd just love to just feel 'back to normal' again...
It'd be reassuring to hear from anyone that's had similar symptoms and if they had it taken out and felt better, or if the effects started to wear off after a few months...
