Advice on throwing a sicko?

I'm currently supposed to be working on New Years Day at 06:45

That's not going to happen though because I'm going to GateCrasher the night before. I've already got a plan going, but was wondering if you guys have any tips as I've not done it before.

I work 4 on 4 off, and when I'm off I always put myself down to be on call. I'm off from 28th Dec till 31st Dec, working on 1st Jan for the first of my 4 on. The plan is to ring in about 17:30 on the 30th and tell them that I'm not going to be able to cover the 31st as I'm really flu'd up and won't be able to go in if I'm called. Then on the 31st at around the same time I'm going to ring and say that I won't be in tomorrow (1st Jan) because I'm still bad and will let them know tomorrow if I'll be in on the Sunday (2nd) but I rnt going to go in then either.

What do you guys think?

I pulled a sickie once to go see this band. I told a guy at work I was going and the day after, I was up in front of the managers for a b****cking!

I agree - what about some consideration for the poor person who probably HAS booked the time off... and is going to be hauled in to cover for you.

Obviously, the two previous guests were obnoxious jobsworths who have never taken a day off in their lives. probably born aged 40. The world doesn't owe anybody a living, but neither do we owe the kind of employers who pay minimum wage and walk all over us anything. Get a goddammed life!

There is a world of difference between being “obnoxious jobsworths” and being fair and conscientious. I work for a low wage, doing exactly the same shift pattern as the original poster, and yes, I have taken time off work, plenty of time, BUT, only when I have been genuinely ill, which is rare, or when I’ve booked the time off.

I realize that to those who can’t pull their own weight, or do their fair share, I probably do seem a bit old-fashioned. But, contrary to what you might think, there’s nothing wrong with honesty and hard work – which doesn’t mean we’re prepared to do your share too, which is what it comes down to.

If you think just not going in when you feel like it is having a life, I’m not sure why I’m even conversing with you.

you truly believe the people that employ you have the same empathy for you as a worker shame when the margins are down they didnt make so many people redundant and then proceed to expect the ones left to cover those gone and sure its needed sometimes when its the only way to keep a company afloat but when they've made 8 % net profit for 10 years previous would be nice if they then used it for security of the work force isnt that called saving for a rainy day

p.s and when they say theyve used that 8% to secure holdings it seems strange why the top 10% increase their margin of wealth over the 90% and thats not including business assets

Where I work there's usually about 10% of the workforce that are basic skivers. The professional 'faffers' who just fart around all day - then when the going gets tough pull a sikie & let the rest of us do their work. Personally I think they should be sacked & we should employ those who actually want to work. I have never pulled a sikie in my life - I never will - that's HONESTY for you. Surely if you're rostered to work - you simply have to, unless someone else will swap the shift or whatever. To skive out with a std lame excuse is just shitty on your work 'mates'. I always shun the skiving bastards at work & make their life as difficult as I can. After all they aren't interested in doing a decent days work - so why butter them up ?
