When you're pierced, you'll be given a larger barbell. Take a barbell, not a ring. With a ring, it twists or deflects to one side.
The barbell will be a larger one, which allows you to move it to simplify cleaning.
After about 6 months, I changed the 10mm to an 8 mm barbell - that put the large bottom-jewel/ball snugly into my navel. Doesn't catch quite so much as the larger barbell.
Now, 3 years on, I don't notice it - not aware of it being there.
Being my navel, it isn't so blatantly obvious - I saw one girl with the scar over her eyebrow - clearly she's had to take it out.
I wouldn't bother about tattoos - its there, its there for good and the ink fades over the years. People take a quick judgement of you as a man - and a set of 4 or 5 ear-rings is I think, overloading it. One's ear-lobe will heal over, the cartilage won't.
