Brown periods

Postby anonom on Mon Sep 08, 2008 3:23 pm

Hey, I've been having the same problem in the sense that my period is brown or even black. I began my period aged 11 and it came every month regularly for a week span, and was a normal red colour. I'm now 19 and for a good many months now it has been brown, and i sometimes get sharp pains in between cycles. I haven't had sex yet either so i know its not a sexually transmitted disease or infection. It makes me wonder what it is though!

I have been on the recieving end and done a lot of research on discharge. I am 26 and after having my son i have had brown discharges and light pains, i have been tested and nothing sinister just scarring after the birth.

But i will say this, discharge of any nature is perfectly normal however a smell to it could be an infection but dont panic it may just be a yeast infection which is very common and easy to clear up there are products for things such as thrush (a rash that is red and itches externally) readily available in any chemist. Generally brown discharge is old blood or the lining of the womb shedding but if you are worried please go to your GP they are very discreet, no one need know and it takes 2 secs for them to give you the check over.

For those that are not sexually active or started a period it is your bodies way of preparing itself for what lie ahead remember we are mainly for reproduction and that takes a lot of prep work for us ladies so it is fine.

Everyone else dont panic that you are pregnant either brown discharge does not instantly mean that you are this could just be because you have recently had sex and the contractions of the vagina has moved some old blood but please ALWAYS use protection.

Finally NEVER overdose on the pill if you miss one then leave it and continue as normal but avoid having sex for a week just till you are back in sync this is VERY DODGEY. And dont rush in to thinking that the pill is the only answer to contraception as there are risks tied to it, i started on dianette when i was 15 and at 17 i developed a breast tumour the docs didnt link it to the pill then one year later i got a blood clot on my lung that nearly finished me off it was only then they realised i was having a reaction so be careful, if it works for you great but if you are not getting on with it look into the mini pill which is safer or the implant or make him do the work and get condoms after all we have to put up with all the rest right.

I hope this helps i thought you could all do with some answers but my best advice is if in doubt see a doctor you may be making yourself worse by worrying about something that is not nessesary x

Vaginal discharge is normal and varies during your menstrual cycle. Before ovulation (the release of the egg), there is A LOT of mucous produced, up to 30X more than after ovulation. It is also more watery and elastic during that phase of your cycle. You may want to wear panty liners during that time.

The things to be worried about include if the discharge has a yellow or green color, is clumpy like cottage cheese, or has a bad odor. If worried, see a doctor.

Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is "fertile" mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Brown: May happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown.

Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle. Sometimes early in pregnancy you may have spotting or a brownish discharge at the time your period would normally come. If you have spotting at the time of your normal period rather than your usual amount of flow, and you have had sex without using birth control, you should check a pregnancy test.

Hello, I'm 20 years old, and I just noticed today that I have a brown discharge. It's clear-ish and it doesn't have a strong smell. My period ended two weeks ago (and it's often late by a week or two). I am sexually active, though it's always been with the use of protection. The last time I had sex however, which was four days ago, there was penetration without a condom. Also, I recently found out that I'm allergic to latex condoms. (Trying to put in as much information as I can so you can help me)

From what I've read so far, it's a bit early for me to be spotting for pregnancy. But I'm still worried since there was unprotected penetration during the last time I had sex. Is this just my vagina "cleaning out" or is there a possibility that I'm pregnant? Thank you in advance!
