I am not a supporter of SLORC, but I have to admit there is no evidence that the 1990 general election was free and fair. Of course this is because SLORC did not allow international observers. The West infer that the election was free and fair mainly based on the outcome, victory by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy Party.
Why hasn't NATO or the U.S. or a Western or international coalition invaded Myanmar to overthrow the SLORC? Because Myanmar borders China and India, the SLORC need not fear military intervention by NATO, the U.S. or any Western coalition.
The power to effect change in Myanmar lies only with China and India. The West should focus its efforts on enlisting both China and India to effect the overthrow of the SLORC. Both countries must agree for anything to happen. If either China or India want the SLORC to remain in power, for whatever reason, the SLORC will continue to rule and the West is powerless to do anything but make noises.
