I just cannot wait for Myron's response to this.

As for me I am actually in two minds concerning his leadership and rule. Ok he is not a democrat, or a capitalist and has more than likely committed some atrocities. But there is still a lot to be said for his leadership in standing up to the US in both a financial and political sense. It seems there is has been a degree of peace and stability in the country (Despite Americas best efforts) and there is a Social welfare system that has a lot to be said for it.

This is an outside opinion and no doubt some people will disagree, some possibly quite strongly.

Universal health care at the price of 50 years of dictatorship????
No thank you.
We Americans are damn tired of being thought of as dumb by the rest of the world. So we went to the polls in November and removed all doubt.

Oh I don't know--I think my mother (who was a 3rd grade teacher at the time) would have disagreed with you--I asked her once when I was in my formative years and she was questioning my "hawkish" attitude, if she'd "rather be red than dead". And she said "Yes". She also voted for Bill Clinton. Weird, huh?

50 years of dictatorship lol ....Thats rich from a country that until as late as 79 had legalised institutional racism. Where the death penalty is a part of life in many states. Where today an autistic boy can be gassed for a capital crime.

For as long as your history goes back you have persecuted blacks, hispanics and the rest in the US. Even to the degree that you wouldnt share a drink with a black guy fighting alonside you in the World Wars.

My grandad used to tell me how he would go to a dance hall in the UK and see these ''good ol American white boys'' trying to get off with girls and the girls would purposley reject their advances and go dance with a coloured guy - Just to piss them off and cos they hated their entrenched predjudices

Now...Fred? shouldnt you be in your workshop making up crosses for burning for when Obama becomes your president rather than commenting on FF.....By the way does your Captain America outfit hang well on your skinny body?

Castro’s not a democrat but then nor was Batista. Cuba swopped a corrupt and incompetent dictator for a competent and righteous one. He always struck me as a pragmatic man and deeply committed to improving the lives of his fellow Cubans. Cuba is a socialist state with an official black market; you have to register to stay in an illegal hotel. Genius.

One of Fidel Castro’s last act as President before he fell ill was to deal with an energy shortage. He increased electricity prices by 333% because people weren’t treating this scarce resource with enough respect and then went and bought 100,000 new energy efficient fridges and freezers from China to replace all the old 1950’s American vintage fridges left over from before the revolution. Tough love.

I think the fact that he’s retired on health grounds just proves that he was a good guy all along. Unlike a whole host of dictators around the world who are clinging onto power as if it were the elixir of life itself he’s happy to say “Job done, feet up, pass my that cigar.” Mind you the fact that he feels able to retire speaks volumes about how much his people love him and how he’s treated them. Compare the life expectancies of Fidel Castro and Robert Mugabee in their home countries post retirement.

Incidently, if we were to divide up the world’s GDP evenly using current food and energy production technology the standard of living would be just about Cuban. Perhaps we should look a little closer at how they do things.

It was time for him to step down. It was a long winding journey for him to rule Cuba that long and he's getting old too.

I wonder if there's a possibility that the trade embargo will be lifted.
