Coming Off the Pill

Postby Boosey2 on Wed Apr 30, 2008 7:08 pm

Hey, just wanted to share my experience with all of you regarding this subject.

I came off the pill two years ago after taking it for 5 years, I did not have a period for 6 months! It was actually a session of acupuncture and herbs which brought it back. However, in those 6 months I lost half of my hair. I went to the doctors on numerous occasions just to be told and I quote 'if you are that worried about it go back on the pill, it can't do you any harm' To me the damage was already been done. My skin is now very very dry and my hair brittle, coarse and although better than it was is still very thin. I always had very healthy hair up until two years ago.

Of course I am not suggesting this is going to happen to any of you but it may make you reconsider taking the pill again. It is dangerous and recent research links it to breast cancer, which is not a subject often covered by press as they (the government) just want to control the population!!

With no help from god knows how many doctors I decided to do a private a private hormone saliva test. I was tested for one whole month. It revealed I have low progesterone which is called oestrogen dominace! I had asked the doctors several times about hormone testing but they wouldn't do it because I was now having regular cycles and am 'normal'. Hair is not a viable reason for doctors to spend their money on a referal. What they do not understand is that the hair is a refection of the internal body and not just about vanity (I am a holistic therapist so doctors hate me anyway!) I took these saliva tests results to my doc (a locum who got nasty!) and asked for their thoughts. Three docs looked at it and said they can not do anything because they don't understand it and the nhs did not do the tests so these tests are probably meaningless. Also that because I have a normal cycle I am not viable for any referrals. They even told me even if I PCOS (this is a condition where you can still have a cycle but not produce enough progesterone to support the egg, no luteal phase!) they would not offer me treatment unless I was trying for a child!! How rude!!

So, basically I am non the wiser of what my hormones are up to, no thanks to GPs and even two Drs of Endocrinologist who I e-mailed (they were ass holes!!)

Anyway, I would love to hear from anyone who has had the same problem as me or is going through it now. Please don't panic if you have just come off the pill that this will happen to you, I think it is uncommon and I have many friends who have come off the pill and been just fine. I guess I just have karma issues ha ha!!! For all you who are worried about not having a cycle don't worry it will come sooner or later. The ovaries are just used to being supported by the pill, your systems just need to sort themselves out and start working again. But if you are really concerned go and shout at your GP and demand a referral!!!! (or try acupuncture, I swear by it)

Anyone tried progesterone cream, Serenity? It is used to treat infertility holistically through plant progesterone but I have been told it can do more damage then good. I know this true if you plaster it on your face but wondered if anyone knew of any real dangers?

Trying for a baby

Postby Guest on Fri May 16, 2008 7:58 pm

Hi, I posted a few months ago now to say that I was coming off the pill to try for a baby but was worried about acne returning and abnormal periods etc. Well, Ive had the whole kabudle! Ive been off the pill (dianette) now for 5 months and things were going ok skin wise up until three weeks ago, when my skin just broke out so badly. Its settled down abit since I just started using the Freederm lotion which I was assured by Boots would be ok to use while trying for a baby (can anyone confirm that?) but Ive now got horrible red marks all over my face and still getting the odd bump or three, also my blackheads are really bad! Period wise, after reading some of your posts, I was lucky that they returned at all, but I was going about 5/6 weeks in between bleeds which was strange for me - however, today Ive started (Im pretty sure thats whats happened cos I have really bad period pains) but Ive only gone 15 days since my last period!! Its just abit strange!! Should I be worried?

coming off the pill

Hi Everyone, Just wanted to share my experience to put some people at ease who may think they are pregnant!!
Ive been on the pill since I was 14 (10 years) and decided to come off it about two months ago as i wanted to start trying for a baby. i was on microgynon. I had my first period when it was due (which i think is quite normal). However, since then i have felt really really ill- feeling really sick everyday, mega bloated, huge swollen and sore boobs (gone up to 32f), really bad smomach pains like i was going to come on and just generally really tired. i had had unprotected sex so thought i could be pregnant as i thought i had all the signs. However, have finally come on today after suffering for last 2wks (7 days late). So for anyone else who has felt like this i think it must be quite normal- just while your hormones sort themselves out, so dont panic i think you're pregnant! i was regular b/f i went on the pill aswell. omg am feeling so ill at the moment, am really heavy and have the worst period pains!! arhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I thought I'd post my experience on here. I read this forum a few months ago, and it made me feel a bit better, so I hope I can make someone else feel better! I was on the pill for around 2.5 years (I'm 23 now), and I went off of it at the end of September 2007. I had a really light period around 4.5 - 5 weeks after going off, although looking back I'm not sure if that was a light period or some sort of withdrawal bleeding. After that, I didn't get a period for 7 months. I felt like my period was going to start a few times, but it never did. I even got spotting twice around the 5 and 6 month mark which got my hopes up, but it never came. Finally, I went to my doctor in Mid May, and got some bloodwork done. She didnt seem too worried about my not getting a period in so long, and said it was within the "normal" range. She called me a few days later and said everything came back normal, and she would give me a perscription for progesterone to try to "kick start" my period again. I was away from home, so I couldnt get the perscription right away (I was planning on starting it at the beginning of june), but a few days after I got that call from my doctor with the results, my period started (this was around May 24)! I dont know if it was just a big coincidence, but I think the stress I was causing myself over worrying about not getting my period was actually causing me to not get it. I was convinced something was wrong with me, and maybe after getting the results that everything was fine, I relaxed a bit which allowed my period to start. So I guess if you're worried something might be wrong, just go to the doctor and get checked out, and if everything is ok, hopefully your stress level will go down which will allow you to get your period!

Help Me

Postby SazzleWazzle86 on Sun Jun 01, 2008 7:23 am

Please help me, I have been reading these posts and I do feel a little bit better but I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced the things I have. I came off the pill (Yasmin) after 5yrs in January. I had a period straight after my last pill and then another heavy and painful one a month later. But since then...nothing! I feel sick a lot of the time and have lost my appetite, my skin is not very good and I feel achy and bloated. Every day it feels like I am coming on my period but with no joy! Also my boobs feel very sore when I am not wearing a bra (they are very big!).

Do you think that this is normal? I would cope if I was pregnant bu it is not the ideal situation for me at the moment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi guys, I think it is normal to put on weight sometimes after coming off the pill . I have been off marvelon for 5 weeks now and have gone from a size 12 to a 14 with bigger boobs! Other than that feel slightly sick and haven't had a period yet. I'm hoping the weight will come off once things regulate as I can't fit in any of my clothes!

Coming off the pill

Postby missKara on Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:51 pm

I came off the pill (Marvelon) since January after being on it for 3-4 years.

For me, marvelon was great whilst i was on it. I didn't put on much weight, my boobs were fuller and I have a noticeable decrease in spots.

It only came to my attention, when I came off it how much it affected my health. I realised how much more emotional I was whilst on the pill, prone to being moody and overly sensitive. When I also came off the pill, I lost my appetite to eat at all for 2 WHOLE WEEKS!!! I lost a stone in body weight and this worried me a heck of a lot.

However, my appetite picked up and I am now 8.4st which I never have been before when I was on the pill ( I am 5'4 in height). I was used to being 7st when I was on the pill, a lot happier with that weight also. Nowadays I feel bloated, fat and insecure.

The worst side effects from coming OFF the pill is the breakage of spots! On my face, neck, back, chest, hairline- everywhere unimaginable! Ive never felt so insecure about getting spots. Also I have noticed how much more greasy and oily my skin and hair is.

I am tempted to go back on Marvelon, because I cannot stand this change. I am reluctant that it will change, it has been almost 6 month since coming off the pill. I take care of myself, eat fruit, cleanse my face but to no avail does the spots ever stop breaking out.

Does anybody share the same dilemma? I am currently waiting for my period to come, it seems like it hasnt come in ages (about a month) and I am tempted to start taking marvelon again (as I still have one pack left from previous). I am considering going to the nurse next week to ask for some advice as well, but is there anyone out there now who could help or share any similar advice? Thank you, much appreciated for those who take the time to read this.
